BE SURE TO BRING:

Hiking boots, rain gear, wool sweater, windbreaker, binoculars, short and long pants, camera, batteries, flashlight, personal medication, sunglasses, pocket knife, daypack, driver’s license, proof of insurance (FAQ 27 if applicable) for rental car.

Remember: There is no cellular service between Sept-Iles and Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan and between Havre-Saint-Pierre and Natashquan. Not all villages sell gas. The long distances between gas stations means you must refuel in the villages that offer the service before leaving for the next destination. Be careful – there is wildlife on the road!.

Day 6: HAVRE-SAINT-PIERRE - NATASHQUAN (154 KM)

KEGASKA Continue driving East another 44 km on the final, unpaved section of Route 138 to the village of Kegaska, gateway to the isolated region of Quebec’s Lower North Shore. The name Kegaska is from the Montagnais language and refers to the bay on either side of the point. A trading post in 1831, Kegaska saw the arrival of 13 Acadian families between 1852 and 1860. Following a serious epidemic that decimated the population in the winter of 1871, the Cayens deserted Kegaska for Havre-Saint-Pierre, giving up their fishing facilities to Newfoundlanders. Since October 2013, Kegaska is connected by road to the rest of the province of Quebec. Fishing is the main economy of this small English-speaking village.
