Return flights between Quebec and Blanc-Sablon. This exclusive “trip of a lifetime” offered by the Cooperative Voyages CoSte, takes you to the edge of the eastern border of Quebec, the end of the North-Shore of the Gulf of Saint-Lawrence.
A true initiation to the “other Quebec”: that of a maritime way of life that was established thanks to the resilience of settlers and fishermen from “upstream” of the Saint-Lawrence , France, the Island of Jersey, the Basque country, Norway and Iceland, and more recently, from Newfoundland.
After passing over the Saint-Lawrence and the hundreds of kilometres of Lower-North-Shore coastline (seen from above, the landscape looks like lace, composed of rock and lichen that the rest of the boreal forest adheres to, sprinkled with lakes and rivers and a multitude of islands that characterize the outskirts of this remote region of Quebec), your plane sets down on the tarmac of Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon (with stops in Sept-Iles-Iles, Natashquan, La Romaine, Chevery and St-Augustin): mythical village because of the distance that once separated it from the large urban centres. Here is where your experience begins, the place Jacques Cartier labelled as the “the land that God gave to Cain”. However, nothing could be further from the truth!
In Blanc-Sablon, and the neighbouring communities that make up the municipality of Bonne-Esperance, a regional lifestyle has clearly been organized with services that only the resilience of the early pioneers and the vitality of the people can explain. We are at the border of Labrador, which you will have a chance to discover after you have traveled along the last section of route #138 to Vieux Fort. Everything here tends to emerge from the fabulous history of great hunting and fishing expeditions that have occurred here through the centuries. You’ll hear residents speaking French and speaking English, some of them are of Eskimo descent: differences within a community of sharing established over more than two hundred kilometres of coastline that you will leave momentarily to go see the icebergs that linger on their way through the Straits of Belle-Isle.
