You’ve just entered Minganie in Thunder River. Stop at Manitou River (km 1088) to admire the cascades and impressive waterfall (with staircases to assist on the trail). Upon your arrival at the village, enjoy a local-flavoured cocktail at the Coste Travel cooperative office, located at 454, Jacques-Cartier (Route 138). Next, visit the Norman-style wooden semi-cathedral, built by 300 volunteers. Take a walk to the beautiful Petit and Grand Sault Falls, which gave the village its name. Check into your hotel, followed by a cocktail and an excellent dinner featuring local flavours.
On your way, a brief stop at the peaceful hamlet of Magpie will charm you. Stop at the lookout with a view of the gulf and/or visit the hydroelectric station. In Havre-Saint-Pierre, take a 1 hour 45-minute cruise through the heart of the Mingan Islands Archipelago to admire the numerous monoliths that have inspired poets and painters alike. Make stops at Quarry Island and Niapiskau Island. Return to Rivière-au-Tonnerre in the late afternoon.
Your morning destination is Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan. A sea excursion in the western part of the Mingan Islands Archipelago offers a magnificent site for observing seabirds at Île aux Perroquets.
